Statement to Joomla! license issue
I actually didn't want to talk about it, and I think the discussion is getting very boring and repetitive already, with many unknowing persons adding more noise and poison to it all.
But as part of the Joomla! community and as leader of one of the biggest Joomla! projects around, I'm feeling responsible to give a public statement.

I think that the very source of the problem, and the origin of the entire discussion is not the license itself.
It has to do with the core team, the marketing of Joomla! and the speed in which joomla! and the community is growing.

Let's go back in time for a second:
When Joomla! was born, everybody had great hopes for a better CMS, a better community and perhaps a better "open source". It was a very good feeling to be part of this new era and vibrant community. Everybody was excited to see how the little "baby" would grow. And with all the excitement came the marketing - the "best open source CMS" which has won many many prices and contests.

With all these events and the growing size of users, Joomla! slowly started to get impersonal and the vibrancy
of the community decreased because Joomla! was marketed as a product, and not as a community project.
- At least if feels so to me.

Furthermore it seemed that the quality of newer Joomla! versions started to decrease with every release, while the
marketing around Joomla! expanded. Also, the communication between the core team and the community was slowly getting worse and the core team has made some big mistakes: doing/changing things behind the back of the community.
Removing the rider, changing the behavior of the Itemid's - just to name a few.

The consequences of this are obvious, and the discussion about the license was only a matter of time, and perhaps just the last straw that broke the camel's back.
Many people were not so happy with the way things happened and have changed - already before the discussion about the license.

That's why we have all the mess in my opinion, and I'm not sure if the development of ProjectFork will be continued for Joomla!. There are other open source CMS with a more stable foundation and position.

- Tobias

Any Open Source project with as many users and developers as Joomla! has will have issues like this one. What is nice about Joomla! is that it has proven, on more then one occasion, that the project can survive major disagreement within the community. I for one hope you will continue your development within this community. I think the core team is making a mistake here, and will probably make more in the future, but please do not abandon the community because its leaders are human.

Just my thoughts since Mambo days: it's mostly not what is done, but HOW it is done. As Dean M. said: "lack of communication, lack of direction/aims/ definition of what Joomla is and who it is for, prioritising of project goals", and if you research my more nagging posts on either Mambo or Joomla forums, I raised these points a few times, still waiting for answers...
You are never allowed to critizise anything, as soon as one dares he is brandmarked as anti-community, negative, and replies are "if you don't like it and want to be positive (about everything Core does and says), just go away.. sux (soorry)

Heh. I think you all got the bull by the wrong end. By going pure GPL Joomla has done the best in the interests of its future. It's obvious, the GPL was written to protect four fundamental freedoms and by wandering into some prostitution of proprietary co-existance the project is at great risk. Fork away folks but stop returning to Joomla trying to return to the bad ole days. GPL is GPL. A safe harbor. If you don't like that harbor ... go sailing into rockier seas if you must. But remember the GPL applies to any fork and copyright holders may well assert their rights at any given time and revoke their contribution. They are well within their rights, if you are not compliant. Food for thought.

As far as i'm concerned, as long as people are involved, there will always be problems. Own agendas, pride, greed.....normal human traits unfortunately.

My only concern over the whole issue is that you have contemplated leaving the Joomla platform......please don't.

From the many users that are very grateful for project fork, we urge you to stick with it......and if you want any heads busted, just yell out.....heehee

Hi,

well, i cant spot the reason for your thought's up on the licence discussions an the statement from the Joomla! Core.

The only problem I see in this is the fact, that after the split from Mambo in 2005 the core did not review the Faq's! What has been written there, as far as I understand the GPL, and I'm talking from 'the rider within' was a violence against the GPL. Joomla! has since the release of 1.0.0 been a GPL licenced Software. And the Core Statement just clarefyed it, that it also will be GPL, and Tobias, the Project Fork is also Licenced under the GPL right?

And, as next, think about the load of Support from the Community you had in the past, thinking of the Naming Contest, and after the Logo contest... Is it worth to drop something like that ??

give it a Go !!
I would realy miss PF :)

With full respect to your reasons for possibly dropping the project from further development for Joomla, I am curious if you've decided to take such a stance or not? I am continuing to watch this project and would love to know if you've decided to go on developing for Joomla, and if not, what CMS you've decided to move to (Mambo seems to have a very nice stance on what they consider 'derivative', as that is what seems to have stemmed the whole Joomla issue)

Thanks for what you've created thus far, and for letting all of us who are watching this project know what you intend to do.... :)

peace,

I can understand your problems. I think the will be always some days of a active membership to be unhappy with the behavour a of a community. But that is not to bad. The question of a great community is not if there are problems or not, the question is how the community deals with the problems to solve the issues between each other. I am just a little One-Man-Show agency, which lives from your great work. But so far I can see from outside, I think you all have a great way to talk among each other. I also think you are quiet right with your ideas about the currend development, please try to tell your friends, perhaps you can change their mind and then your community will be stronger than ever. Thank you for yaour work. As a little thank you here is a link to MY WAY of contributing to the web, its just some little free chill out movies to have some mindcleanig minutes: www.aqualounge-project.de , i hope you enjoy it.

thank you for your work!

I agree with your comment and specifically with the shift/change of Joomla going from Community Project based to Product based - it's unfortunate.

However, your contribution to the project is enourmous - project management, is at it's core, the basic function of any website project. It would be my hope that you continue your involvement for several reasons:

1) I'm selfish and I desparately need your project
2) The more people that use it, the more that will have exposure to blog posts such as this
3) By maintaining the fight, you're better positioned to affect change
