Introduction to ProjectFork 0.7
Hi everybody!

First, I want to apologize for not beeing available during the last 5 weeks.
I moved to a new appartment and had to wait for my new Internet connection since the Telekom is out on strike - at least here in Germany.

During this time, I was working offline on the next ProjectFork release which will offer plenty of improvements.
ProjectFok 0.7 focuses on scalability and extendability, and not on new "end-user features".

I realized that the wishes and required features from the community are very different, mainly because of the different business sectors. Every business and every company demands different features and abilities from a software.

So I had to ask myself, should I pick up all the wishes and stuff them into one application?
The answer is NO. The reason why ProjectFork is so successfull is because it's easy to use and clearly arranged.
And I want to keep it this way. The bad side of this is, of course, that the application may be too simple or just not applicable
for many users/companies.

What's the solution?
The keyword is modular system. A modular system let's you scale, extend or reduce features of an application.
An obviously good example for this is Joomla itself! - Would you still use Joomla if you could not install extensions?
I guess not.

So that's the big plan for ProjectFork 0.7. Creating a modular system where you can simply modify features accordingly to your needs. There will be three different type of extensions:

  • Areas - Similar to components in Joomla!
  • Panels - Similar to modules in Joomla!
  • Processes - Similar to bots in Joomla!

Now you might ask, why not use the existing Joomla! framework for this?
Since ProjectFork does not make any difference between "frontend" and "backend", Modules that you would install for ProjectFork through the Joomla! Installer would not be available in the backend - they work only in the frontend.
And there are some other issues as well.
That's why we need our own extension system, to make everything work in the frontend and backend.

Any release date or demo version available yet?
Nope, sorry. But I'll let everyone know here as soon as something "usefull" is available.

If you have something to add, please post a comment below.

Thanks,
Tobias

Tobias, dude..your stuff is the shiz. I have only had one issue, and would really like to dig into it with you. It was using the mod for displaying projects per joomla _id and group_id, it appears to show all of the projects when a single user (assigned to any group) is logged in (Front-End). I did not spend much time on it, as I had to get the site up. Thanks for all of your work!

I think the way you're developing the module system so you can admin from the front end is brilliant and all component developers should follow your lead, or maybe the Joomla core developers should :)

I guess it would be better if the user belonging to a certain group could not see/download files from the other groups. Or much more better if the admin could decide/choose if the file/s will be available to all members or not. Another thing, if possible, a member could have an account of his/her own to simple upload and store files that nobody (except admin) could view/download it. An I guess this needs synchronization with the CB or Joomla users database.

Yes, ProjectFork 0.7 will work on 1.5 only (no legacy mode).
1.0 will no longer be supported by then.

I think that your thinking is spot on.

"Keep It Simple Stupid"

I have only just looked at your software over the last few days and know the level of complexity is perfect for general and wide use.

Congratulations on some superb software - you should be proud.
